Transporting Mining Commodities in Southern Africa: Chrome, Lithium and Iron Ore

Mining is the backbone of road freight in Southern Africa. Zimbabwe's Great Dyke produces some of the world's largest chrome reserves, the country has become one of Africa's leading lithium producers, and new iron ore and steel projects are reshaping truck transportation on the Beira and North-South corridors. In South Africa, the Bushveld Complex supplies most of the world's chrome ore and the Northern Cape ships iron ore through Saldanha. Between mine gate and port, almost all of it moves on trucks at some point.

Why mining freight is different

Mining commodities are heavy, low value per tonne compared with retail goods, and shipped in large repeat volumes to a small number of destinations. That changes the logistics calculation in three ways:

  • Payload is everything. A 34-tonne interlink that runs at 30 tonnes is losing money on every trip, so the right trailer and axle configuration matters more than speed.
  • Volumes are contract based. A chrome concentrate off-take of 10,000 tonnes a month is roughly 300 truck loads, which means mines need a pool of Load Carriers, not one transporter.
  • Compliance is strict. Export permits, weighbridge certificates and assay documentation travel with every load, and a truck stopped at a border for missing paperwork can hold up a vessel.

Chrome: Zimbabwe's Great Dyke and South Africa's Bushveld

Zimbabwean chrome ore and chrome concentrate are mined along the Great Dyke around Shurugwi, Zvishavane, Mutorashanga and Lalapanzi, then either smelted domestically into ferrochrome or exported as ore and concentrate. Exports are marketed through the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ), and every export load requires MMCZ clearance alongside the ZIMRA export entry.

The main routes to port are:

  • Beira Corridor: Great Dyke to Mutare, through the Forbes and Machipanda border posts, to the port of Beira. This is the shortest route to the sea for most of the Dyke at roughly 500 to 700 km.
  • Durban via Beitbridge: longer at more than 1,500 km but used when Beira is congested or the buyer's shipping line calls at Durban.
  • Maputo via Forbes or Beitbridge: growing in popularity for chrome and ferrochrome bound for Asia.

Chrome ore and concentrate travel loose in side tipper interlinks for bulk export or in one-tonne bulk bags on flatbed and dropside trailers when the buyer needs traceability by lot. Ferrochrome, being higher value, generally moves in bulk bags or containers on flatbeds. South African chrome from Steelpoort and Rustenburg follows the same pattern to Richards Bay and Durban.

Lithium: spodumene and petalite concentrate

Zimbabwe's lithium sector has expanded rapidly around Bikita, Goromonzi, Kamativi and the Sandawana and Zulu projects. Since the government's 2022 ban on exporting raw lithium ore, almost all export cargo is spodumene or petalite concentrate, typically between 3 and 6 percent lithium oxide. Concentrate is a fine, valuable material and it is shipped in lined bulk bags or sealed containers, not loose.

Logistics implications for Load Owners and Load Carriers:

  • Moisture control matters. Bags must be covered on flatbeds or moved in tautliners, and a truck that arrives at Beira with wet concentrate faces penalty deductions.
  • Weight per bag is high, so load plans need to keep axle weights legal on the Mutare road.
  • Export documentation includes the MMCZ export permit, an assay certificate and a ZIMRA export entry, and the consignment is often inspected before it leaves the mine.
  • Security is a real concern. Because concentrate is valuable and easy to divert, mines increasingly require verified carriers with goods-in-transit cover, GPS tracking and a digital contract that records seal numbers and bag counts.

Most lithium concentrate leaves through Beira or Durban for China, so the Beira Corridor and the North-South Corridor carry the bulk of this traffic.

Iron ore and steel

Iron ore is the lowest value per tonne of the three, which is why South Africa's Sishen and Kolomela mines rely on the dedicated rail line to Saldanha rather than trucks. Trucks come into the picture at the domestic level. In Zimbabwe, the Manhize steel project near Chivhu has created significant new truck transportation demand for iron ore, limestone, coal and finished steel between the Midlands, Harare and Beira. Domestic iron ore moves in side tippers and rigid tippers over short hauls, while finished steel products such as billets, rebar and coil move on flatbeds with proper chaining and dunnage.

For Load Carriers, steel-related freight is attractive because it produces regular, predictable truck loads in both directions: raw materials in, finished products out.

Choosing the right truck for bulk freight

  • Side tipper interlink: loose chrome ore, iron ore, coal and aggregates. Fast discharge at port stockpiles. Payload up to 34 tonnes in Zimbabwe and South Africa.
  • Flatdeck interlink or superlink: bulk bags of chrome and lithium concentrate, containers, steel. Needs tarpaulins for concentrate.
  • Dropside link: bagged product where side access helps forklift loading at smaller mines.
  • Tautliner: weather-protected bulk bags, especially for lithium concentrate on the wet Mutare to Beira leg.
  • Rigid tipper: short-haul mine-to-plant or mine-to-siding work.

Permits, weighbridges and border compliance

Every mining export load in Zimbabwe requires at minimum an MMCZ export permit, a ZIMRA export bill of entry, a weighbridge certificate and the carrier's cross-border documentation. Mozambique requires a transit declaration and, for Beira, port access booking through the terminal operator. South Africa requires the SAD500 declaration and, for chrome ore, proof that the export complies with Department of Mineral Resources requirements. Overloading is policed heavily on all three corridors and fines are charged to the carrier, so the weighbridge ticket protects everybody.
